Therapist in Chicago. The Difference between Psychotherapy & Coaching:

The difference between coaching and psychotherapy has to do with the type of issues that need to be addressed, and with the strategies used to help people make progress. Most coaching clients can accomplish their goals by focusing on behaviors, and by having someone provide support and hold them accountable for completing homework and following through on agreed upon tasks. Coaching is future oriented and concerned with helping clients create present and future possibilities.

People who seek psychotherapy are often stressed about specific issues in their lives. They may need assistance with self-esteem, with self-defeating patterns of behavior, or with difficult personal relationships. Therapy is directed towards helping clients understand the connection between past experiences and current challenges; with teaching people how to manage feelings, and with helping clients develop healthy relationships. Psychotherapy may include referral for medication or substance abuse treatment. The primary goal of psychotherapy is to help people achieve a greater sense of wellbeing and contentment. Clients who resolve the issues that brought them into treatment, may transition to coaching in order to maintain their gains, and to continue growing and improving the quality of their lives.

Coaching and psychotherapy clients are both expected to pay for services up front. However, because psychotherapy is a mental health service, it may be covered in part, by insurance. After four sessions, psychotherapy clients may request a statement which can be submitted to their insurance company for reimbursement. Career coaching clients may be able to claim coaching as a tax deductible business expense.
