I have been a therapist in Chicago for almost thirty years. Regardless of my other work experiences, I have always maintained a psychotherapy practice, working primarily with individuals and couples.
I specialize in premarital, marital and divorce therapy and I have extensive experience treating individual adults who struggle with depression and anxiety. I have advanced training in substance abuse treatment and I have many years of experience working with clients in addiction recovery, and with individuals who grew up in alcoholic families. My psychotherapy clients benefit from the same goal-oriented techniques I use with my coaching clients.
My work with couples involves a psycho-educational approach that teaches how to communicate, and encourages compassion and understanding. While it is ideal to have both partners engage in couples therapy, I have often been able to accomplish significant change in a marriage or relationship even when working with only one partner.
My work with individual clients incorporates traditional techniques of empathic listening in combination with action-oriented, goal focused interventions. My immediate goal is to help my clients resolve issues that are troubling them, so they can have successful relationships and live happy, healthy lives.
For clients who are struggling with anxiety or depression, psychotherapy may include a referral for medication. Mild anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications can help people feel better and enable them to approach life in a more optimistic, balanced way. Therapy may also include a referral for substance abuse treatment in order to achieve and maintain sobriety. For family members of alcoholics or addicted individuals, therapy may include referral to a support group for help in learning how to stop enabling behavior, or to better cope with a family member who is struggling with substance abuse issues.
Clients often ask how long psychotherapy will take. While I can’t predict how quickly someone will be able to change or make progress on their specific issues, after our first meeting, I am often able to make a recommendation for an initial course of treatment. At the end of that period, we can evaluate the progress made and decide together, what to do next.
One of the benefits of psychotherapy is that it may be covered, in part, by health insurance. Clients are expected to pay for therapy as they go. However, after four sessions, you may request a statement, which I will prepare for you to submit for insurance reimbursement.
If you would like more information about either my coaching or psychotherapy services, please call me so we can speak further.
